10 facts about Mango


As the season of scorching summer starts, all we look forward to is MANGO- THE KING OF FRUITS! The most loved and popular fruit worldwide, the “‎Mangifera indica” is famous for its juicy, sweet, fibrous and healthy pulp. Due to its 100s of variety and names adding to the health benefit,it’s called the king of fruits! If you are a mango fruit fan read on to know interesting facts, you may have never known!

1)      Mango is a member of the cashew family of flowering plants; other species include the pistachio tree and poison ivy.

2)      The name 'mango' is derived from the Tamil word 'mangkay' or 'man-gay'. When the Portuguese traders settled in Western India they adopted the name as 'manga'


3)      The Mango tree is a symbol of love.Mango leaves are used at weddings to ensure the couple bear plenty of children (though it is only the birth of the male child that is celebrated - again by hanging mango leaves outside the house).

4)      Mango is the national fruit of India, Pakistan and the Philippines. It is also the national tree of Bangladesh.

5)      The oldest living mango tree is 300 years old and is found in East Khandesh [  Khandesh District is a former administrative division of British India, which included the present-day Jalgaon, Dhule and Nandurbar districts and a portion of Nashik District in Maharashtra.] Surprisingly, this tree still produces viable fruit!

6)      India produces over 50% of the world’s mango crop!Over 500 named varieties, or cultivars, of mangos exist!

7)      The anti-oxidant compounds in mangoes protects you from cancer.


8)      Mangoes gives daily care to your skin and lets it glow in a natural way.Mangoes clear the clogged pores in the skin and make it clear and smooth. It also reduces pimples.

9)      One of the most useful nutritional benefits of mango leaves is that it helps in decreasing diabetes by increasing the insulin percentage in the blood. To prevent diabetes you need to boil leaves in water and soaking it for couple of hours and the daily usage of the filtered water helps in diabetes. Its natural sugar helps you fight the disease.

10)   There are hundreds of different varieties of mangoes, ranging in size from 100 grams to more than 1.8 kilogram, but the medium or average size of the mangoes available in most places is between 230 grams to 340 grams.
